Q: What year was Dan's Super Market started.
A: Dan's opened their first store in 1949 in Bismarck, ND. It was started by Roy Rockstad and Eugene "Bus" Leary as Bismarck Super Valu.
Dan’s Super Market, Inc. was started in 1949 by Roy Rockstad and Eugene (Bus) Leary. Roy and Bus pooled their resources and bought the Piggly Wiggly store in Bismarck, North Dakota. This first store was named Bismarck Super Valu. In 1953 they added a second location, Dan’s Super Valu, in the Arrowhead Plaza in Bismarck. A third Bismarck location was opened in 1970. The company continued to grow with remodels and updates, new facilities and acquisitions. Today Dan’s operates 6 stores in Bismarck, Mandan, and Dickinson North Dakota with over 600 employees.
In 1974 Terrance Rockstad rejoined the company after graduating from the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon and worked under the leadership of Roy and Bus. In 1975 Roy purchased Bus’ share of the company and it became a family owned business. Terry was named President of the company in 1977, and is currently CEO and Chairman of the Board. It was Terry’s vision to grow the company responsibly and as the customers demanded.
Terry recognized the importance of excelling in customer service and has been committed to sharing this dedication to customer service with all employees in order to exceed customer expectations when shopping in a Dan’s store. This philosophy lives on today under his leadership and the senior management team of Dennis Bosch, President; Ralph Dockter, Vice President of Retail Operations; Kay Zander-Woock, Chief Financial Officer; and Keith Mantz, Vice President of Finance. Dan’s Super Market, Inc. has a strong commitment to its customers, its employees and the communities it serves.
Today as throughout the past, store operations focus on continuous improvement of the shopping experience by providing clean well lit stores with friendly, courteous personnel and fresh, quality products. At Dan’s freshness is guaranteed!
